HS2 Katrina's Story Film

HS2 wanted to collaborate on Katrina’s incredible story.

Katrina, who identifies as a trans woman, works as a Mobile Crane Operator for Ainscough, a supplier and contractor for HS2, began her transition in 2019. In a remarkable display of courage, she embraced her true self and courageously came out at her workplace in 2022, marking a triumphant return to the construction industry after a prolonged absence.

HS2 and DRPG worked together to craft a poignant and powerful video case study, a testament to Katrina's spirit and her unrelenting pursuit of a more inclusive world. Through her extraordinary tale, we aspired to touch hearts, transcend boundaries, and galvanise change, as we push towards a future where acceptance, respect, and diversity thrive in unison.

Together, we embarked on creating a compelling film that shattered the pervasive myth surrounding the construction industry. Through careful editing, it was established right from the start that Katrina is trans, ensuring that her journey was at the forefront.

Mindful of the objective, we filmed Katrina's interview away from the bustling construction site within a closed set with a minimal crew, allowing Katrina to speak directly to the camera. Not only did this ensure that the focus remained firmly on Katrina and her extraordinary journey, it was this intimate setting that facilitated the amplification of her voice, lending power and authenticity to her storytelling.

Using cutaway shots, we illustrated the poignant moments she shared, such as her transformative experience of acquiring a new name badge, and included glimpses of the construction site as a backdrop.

Katrina's story was shared on Trans Visibility Day, and rail engineer and writer, Gareth Dennis, amplified the film by sharing the video on Twitter.

The combined efforts of Gareth and HS2 sparked an outpouring of engagement, with a total of 42,209 impressions, 15,000 views across Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube, and 1,231 post engagements. The resonance of Katrina's story extended even more, as the video received press coverage on Rail UK.
