HRH The Princess Royal Attends YSS Conference
On Monday 20th April, YSS Worcestershire Young Carers held their annual conference at our studio complex. The day-long conference was organised by YSS Worcestershire Young Carers themselves, with support from our team of Possiblers. Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal, attended the conference as patron of YSS and addressed the delegates keen to learn how best to support young people who regularly care for a family member who is physically or mentally ill, disabled or who misuses substances.
The event also launched the county’s new, Young Carers in Schools programme. Since 2001 YSS has provided individual support to approximately 20,000 people in West Mercia over this time, whilst maintaining a workforce of 100 volunteers. This project was undertaken as part of our 35 CSR projects being delivered in our 35th Anniversary year.
The YSS Worcestershire Young Carers have worked closely with drpteam members from across the business, learning the intricacies of how to deliver an event. On the day of the conference, they stepped into the roles they had been studying and managed the conference logistics flawlessly. Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal arrived at the event during the morning sessions and met key team members from YSS, including the young careers who had made the whole thing possible. She then addressed the crowd, imparting wisdom about the role of young carers, their challenges and how everyone can recognise and support the work they do in difficult circumstances.
Many of the young carers told their own personal stories of how they juggle their responsibilities at home whilst also attending school. Mark Marshall is a 15-year-old young carer who has looked after his mother since the passing of his father 8 years ago, talked about the YSS conference and how the charity has helped and supported him, “It was an honour to meet Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal today. She was extremely pleasant and really down to earth. It’s been such good fun organising the conference, and helping to promote the work YSS and the volunteers do for us carers.”
Dale Parmenter, drp CEO, talked about the conference and the decision to deliver the CSR project, “Each year drp holds a Christmas party for the drp team’s own children. This year we ran the event twice, once for our team and once for the YSS Worcestershire Young Carers. We were blown away by the incredible sacrifices these young carers have had to make and the amazing support provided to them by YSS. We had to find a way to support them further and so this conference, where we’ve worked the careers themselves in creating it, has been our pleasure to deliver. Each carer delivering the event has been amazing and we were all inspired by Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal’s insightful words.”
