Broadcasting Award Ceremony Employee Engagement
For the BBC Outstanding Contribution Awards 2024, we created a memorable end-of-year celebration recognising the remarkable employees and teams behind the organisation. Hosted at the iconic BBC Radio Theatre, the hybrid experience brought colleagues together in the room and online, celebrating their achievements through entertainment, storytelling and shared moments.

CHALLENGE

The BBC needed an awards ceremony that would engage 200 guests at the Radio Theatre while also reaching thousands of colleagues watching remotely. The experience had to feel inclusive and celebratory for both audiences, reflect the creativity associated with the BBC and leave employees feeling part of one connected team.

INSIGHT

With audiences joining from different locations, every part of the ceremony needed to translate beyond the room. By combining recognisable BBC programmes, live entertainment and carefully planned production, we could create an experience that felt distinctly BBC while keeping colleagues engaged wherever they were watching.

SOLUTION

Working closely with the BBC, we managed the complete in-person production, including project management, logistics, branding, content design, technical delivery, talent coordination and on-site management. While the BBC led the virtual stream, our team ensured every element worked effectively for both the live audience and those watching online.

Doctor Who and Ghosts inspired the creative direction, with themed content and event collateral bringing familiar BBC worlds into the Radio Theatre. Sustainability was also considered throughout the build, with trophies produced using 3D printing and set materials repurposed from DRPG’s warehouse.

Guests were welcomed with refreshments and festive mince pies before nominees, identified by different-coloured wristbands, were seated closer to the stage. This helped award presentations run smoothly while ensuring nominees felt part of the occasion from the moment they arrived.

Singer-songwriter Lemar and his band opened the event before Trevor Nelson introduced two panels celebrating the BBC’s work during 2023. Bonnie Langford and Jemma Redgrave discussed Doctor Who, while Charlotte Ritchie and Kiell Smith-Bynoe shared insights from Ghosts.

Greg Davies then took over to host the awards, placing the focus firmly on the employees and teams being recognised. Lemar returned to close the ceremony, bringing the celebration to a memorable finish.

IMPACT

The Outstanding Contribution Awards welcomed 200 guests to the Radio Theatre and reached 4,500 colleagues online, with a further 5,500 watching on demand. The event successfully united its audiences through a shared celebration of the people behind the BBC, receiving high praise for its production, creativity and collaborative delivery.
